Let’s jump into Part 4 of our Study Techniques series; Spaced Repetition
Memorising is tough. 😮💨
There are so many times were we will pour hours into memorising vast amounts of content, only to be left with a measly 30 percent that is fully understood and sticks with us. 😵💫
Memorising can be so tedious and time consuming which can make it a pit fall that many students succumb to.
But don’t give up! 😤 Because we have a little trick up our sleeve that we want to teach you! It’s called “Spaced Repetition”. 😌
As the name suggests, “Spaced Repetition” refers to learning content continuously by re-visiting the same content over increasing intervals. This approach contrasts ‘cramming’ which involves dedicating large blocks of time to set blocks of content. 👩🏾🏫
Differences and Benefits of Spaced Repetition
😪 Avoiding memory fatigue due to smaller periods of time dedicated to memorising
🌐 Ability to interconnect content with each other → this method of networking your information together mirrors how your brain develops synapses and significantly improves recall
💭 More robust understanding of content, as it is viewed in context with other topics within a study module
How to implement Spaced Repetition?
Spaced Repetition is an ongoing process that requires maturity, dedication and must be refined overtime to achieve priceless results. Here are three main components of successful development and use of Spaced Repetition that can kick start your journey:
👩🏾🏫 Tutoring - Tutoring is a MAIN means of incorporating spaced repetition into your learning program. Weekly tutoring sessions inherently implement a spaced repetition aspect into your revision. Preparing for the lesson throughout the week, the lesson itself and post lesson revision is a great example of how spaced repetition has been successful in aiding students for many, many years. An added bonus with tutoring is having a teacher who can spot your progress and intervene in specific learning trajectories to make your learning most effective.
🧑🏾💻 Technology - Incorporating technology into your learning allows for the use of tools such as Quizlet and Anki that help keep yourself accountable with their programs based on spaced repetition. Online calendars and reminders allow you to track progress, and create a spaced repetition schedule that is easy to follow.
🤔 Self Reflection - An integral part of learning and essential aspect of spaced repetition is reflecting on your progress overtime and being self aware of what works and does not work.
Spaced Repetition is a tried and true ✅ study strategy that has aided numerous students in developing their study habits and achieving their goals. We’ve covered the main concepts behind Spaced Repetition and given some examples of where to start implementing into your schedule, so go ahead!🏃🏾Taking the first step is half the journey, and Spaced Repetition is definitely a path we recommend everyone to have a go at! 🥳
